koh Lanta to Phuket - road or ferry?

Hi we are hoping to stay on Koh lanta and travel onto Phuket - I know this can be done either by ferry or road . I think Id prefer the ferry and spend some time to take in Phi Phi on the way. Trouble is will have all our luggage with us.

Any suggestions?

Is there any where on Phi Phi to store stuff safely for half a day - or is this a bad idea? help!

koh Lanta to Phuket - road or ferry?

Hello

We did the exact opposite to you... went from Phuket to Lanta via PP.

I cant remember the name of the ferry operator now but we basically caught the morning ferry to PP around 8am... we then had 4 hours to explore (enough for a wander, some lunch and a quick swim) then we jumped on the 3pm ferry to Lanta... all paid for at once. (this was done on a Phuket - Lanta ticket... we had the option to either stay on the first ferry and go direct after dropoffs at PP or get off and catch the next ferry in 4 hours time)

When you get off the ferry... go to the end of the Pier and off to your right is a little tourist information booth set up... You can store your bags safely here for a small fee (think we paid about 100 baht for 3 bags). They will look after them for you until you are ready to jump on the next ferry.

Easy!

Thanks Emjayreet - thats very helpful - Ive read some of your other advice and you say good stuff . this questions probaly very silly but hey ho here goes - what about passports etc ?- safe to leave in bags or take them with us?!! cheers x

We had a small backpack (day pack) in which we kept all our valuables on us... passports, travellers cheques, money, etc... I would keep any of that stuff in a hangbag/backpack not in your main luggage.

We never had any problems but you never know. The one company to avoid is PhiPhi Family. I have heard this is an operator that has alot of theft.

The ferry does not operate out of Koh Lanta during low season as we found out last week despite booking agencies advising us to the contrary. The ferr from Phuket or Phi Phi will take you to Krabi then it is a road trip to Koh Lanta of about 45mins

Thanks again for the advice - I thought keeping stuff with us was the way to go but worth an ask!!

We are travelling in December- so from what ive read should be no problems with the ferries I hope!

Were planning 2 nights BK - 4 nights Koh lanta - 2 nights Phuket and travelling on to Oz to see my big sis - getting very excited now- think I mite burst before December!!!!!

December is peak season... gorgeous weather... you will love Ko Lanta... its gorgeous. Where are you staying?

Hi Reet - weve not booked yet but I am fancying the andalanta resort - when I first started looking it was middleish expensive but they have been rennovating so am abit worried that rates will be very high. I like the idea of being away from the main touristy bit . I really dont look fab in swimwear but love the water and quiet. Fancy doing the islands tour for snorkelling and seeing the sea gypsy village, wouldnt mind a mooch in saladan. So many things so little time. - You got any thoughts ? thanks for your help x

You should definately do a day with Lanta Long Tail www.lantalongtail.com - Susanna and Sun are brilliant and provide a personalised intimate day out on their long tail boat... away from the tourist crowds... the day we went we were moored in one spot snorkelling, watching about 3 boatloads of snorkellers (at least 50-60 people) all trying to snorkel around each other... we had an amazing lunch on a beach and snorkelled in areas away from the others... truly a fantastic day.

Long Beach is brilliant... if your resort isnt there then at least try spend some time there.. track down the Thai Cat restaurant.... food amazing and also the Sunset Bar for cocktails at sunset!

Go to Ban Sala Dan for dinner at one of the wharf seafood restaurants but turn up early to get the best pick of the fresh seafood.

Hire a motorbike and head over to Old Lanta Town for the day... have lunch at Mango House.... great little town... very picturesque.....

If I think of anything else will let you know... ask Susanna about the best pizza place if you have a craving ... we went to Mr Wee%26#39;s but werent that impressed. I remember her telling us about a newer place that was apparently better.....

Thanks again Reet - the long tail boat is a definate %26#39;to do%26#39; - sounds fantastic. Thanks for all of your advice. be assured I will ask more questions as I think of them - cheers x

Thalis, we stayed at the Layana Resort and Spa on Koh Lanta last month and it was arguably the best place I have ever stayed in. It is fairly small, 50 rooms and it is NOT geared towards kids which may or may not suit. It was low season when we stayed and 6 nights including breakfast was $750 Aus which is about 300 pounds. Check it out on their website. We had a drive round Koh Lanta and didn%26#39;t see anything which made us regret staying at Layana.
