Chiang mai to hanoi

Is anyone aware of any flights that go direct from chiang mai to hanoi? Any overland options?

You could fly to Vietiane in Laos and go by road into Vietnam but be aware the roads are very slow. Also The main highway north/ south in Vietnam is used to do lots of things that are not transport oriented- road side selling, drying crops, driving animals. Speed is often reduced due to this. Interesting trip but it depends on how much time u haVe for travelling.

If limited time u may need to do some flight hops. Another option is to land at Phnom Pen

Hanoi is great. Have a good time. Hoi An is also fascinating. As in Thailand the mid to north in Vietnam is far less tainted by the west.

When in Hanoi try to get out on Halong Bay and do a train trip to Sapa

Flying with http://www.airasia.com/site/en/home.jsp can save you time but you have to go through Bangkok or KL.
