Patong Beach

I have visited PB 3 times over the last 4 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. My friend and her husband were there for the last 2 weeks and hated every minute of it. She said she felt threatened by the hard sell especially of the tailors on the beach road, they were intimidated and was scared to go out. She said she was too scared to cross from the Holiday Inn to the seven eleven across the street she felt so unsafe. The food in all restaurants evcept Sams Place was terrible. The whole resort was dirty with a special mention for Scruffy Murphys. She said Murphys could only serve them soup at 5 in the evening and that it was microwaved. Last year this same couple were in Pattaya and did not like it but they said they enjoyed it better than PB and felt safer there. I was reaaly shocked at her opinions of PB as they were nothing like my experiences there. Any comments?

Patong Beach

Dear eliz4,

Make sure that you don%26#39;t go away with your friends on holidays - unless of course you%26#39;ve been to the holiday spot before. It seems that they don%26#39;t like the same places you do.

We love Patong and always feel safe - food is great %26amp; cheap, and Scruffy Murphys is more like an Aussie hotel than any I%26#39;ve been to in Phuket - we love it! It has great music, great air-conditioning, and fantastic toilets!! A bonus in Phuket.

Maybe they should look at somewhere else outside Thailand, for their next holiday.

Cheers,

Sandy

Hi Eliz, what sort of holiday were your friends looking for? As Sandy said maybe Thailand isn%26#39;t their cup of tea. What exactly did she feel so unsafe from? There is mainly only traffic and tourists walking down that street between the Holiday Inn and the 7/11. We left Molly Malones about midnight with a group of people and I got separated from them in Bangla Rd and I certainly didn%26#39;t feel unsafe at all. I was more worried because I couldn%26#39;t see as well without the specs on, but nothing there that unnerved me at all. (I doubt anyone even noticed me, actually). Maybe she had different ideas and expectations, bit sad really when they were probably looking forward to the holiday. Hope they find somewhere more their style next time.

With the tailors I have noticed that I get less hassled as my sun tan improves..They can tell who the new arrivals are and these are the ones who can be trapped into a spontanious sale..Walk straight past..They wont think you are rude if you dont reply..On your return walk back to the hotel you will find that they will stop bothering you if you ignore them..

hi eliz we are regulars to patong and have stayed at the holliday in many times as for it being dirty what a lot of rubish it is near spotles and the stafe are so freindley we are going back in oct and will be staying at the holliday in may be your friend needs to see a psychiaterist as she has a serious problem yes the tailors are a bit over the top may be your friend should try balli and see what pushey tailors are realy like as for not felling safe once again what a load of rubish we have walked the streets at all hours and never had a problem as for the food are you sure she did not eat of the street vendors and think she was in the resturants tell her next time ther the ones with tables and chairs ps the street vendors arnt that bad either i would sugest to your friend to stay home and to keeping her own house clean and go to mc donalds to eat allacart of course

Hey Kobrob..Youre information on Phuket is very informative..Tell me about your favorite restuarant in Surfers paradise..Thanks..

Hey there Eliz4

I also agree with kobrob the holiday inn is spotless in

the six years we have been staying there we have never had a problem. As for not feeling safe i let my kids walk across the road to the 711 i think it is fine. they go up the road by themselves all the time. Most of the thai poeple get to know your faces and who belongs to who so it is all good. We love phuket and would go any where else for our yearly holiday .

teresa :)

to limited edition we do not go to surfers paradise as we feel safer in patong ther is to many hoones and drunks just looking to start trouble not to mention the large amount of timeshare touts tring to sign you up as for resturant if you are on the goldcoast try the Jin Mar chinese resaturant in mudgeeraba a 15 min from surfesparadise kob rob

Sounds like these friends would%26#39;nt like anywhere they went as it is hard to please some people. I went to PB in 0ct 2005 and didn%26#39;t know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. I felt safer here than anywhere in OZ, the place was so clean which was something i did%26#39;t expect and the restaurants and food were fantastic.

As for the tailors i didn%26#39;t have trouble with them selling me stuff only with then asking me out on dates all the time but it was all in fun and in the end i told them that i only liked girls and that worked a treat LOL (i am purely hetro though but they%26#39;re not to know that).

I was to return in 2006 on my own because of how safe i felt there but instead i went to a milestone birthday in Perth of people that i met in Phuket and stayed in contact with. But i am back in mid Oct this year and just can%26#39;t wait YIPPEE.

Kind regards Relle. :-)

Stayed in the Holiday Inn last year and it was excellent, stayed in a superior room on the 3+ star side and room was very clean and the restaurants in the hotel were excellent, The tailors can be pushy but its really sad if people feel so threatened by them, just walk past them and speak pig latin to confuse them!

going back to phuket at the end of october as its a great place
